14 Filipino judokas to compete in Hong Kong

The Philippine Judo Federation (PJF) is sending 14 athletes to the Asian Judo Championships that will be held on May 25-28 at the Hong Kong Velodrome.

PJF President Dave Carter said the Philippine delegation, led by Filipino-Japanese Kiyomi Watanabe, a bronze medalist in the 2017 Paris Grand Slam (-63 kg.) , will leave on May 23.

Watanabe, the two-time SEA Games gold medalist and silver winner at the European Open in Oberwart, Austria last February, is now ranked No. 23 in the world.

“The Hong Kong tournament will serve as exposure of our athletes who will compete in the SEA Games and the Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games (IMAG),” said Carter in an interview Friday.

The SEA Games is slated Aug. 19-30 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia while the IMAG will be held in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan on September 17-27.

The PJF is also sending 18 athletes to the Terengganu International Open Judo Championships on May 13-14 in Malaysia. Four officials will join the delegation.

Carter said about 36 countries are participating in the Asian Judo Championships, which features individual and team competitions in both men and women divisions.

The categories in the men’s division are -60 kg., -66 kg.,-73 kg., -81 kg., -90 kg., -100 kg., +100 kg. while in the women’s division are -48 kg., -52 kg., -57 kg., -63 kg., -70 kg., -78 kg. and +78 kg.

In the team event, the categories are -66 kg., -73 kg., -81 kg., -90 kg. and +90 kg. in the men’s division and -52 kg., -57 kg., -63 kg.,-70 kg. and +70 kg. in the women’s division.

Meanwhile, the Judo Union of Asia (JUA) Congress will be held on May 24 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel. A Zonal Meeting is also scheduled on May 23.
