DOH awards P1.4-M to Iloilo City for ‘good practices’

Iloilo City is a recipient of a PHP1.4-million grant from the Department of Health (DOH) for its good practices in implementing various health programs.

City Health Officer Dr. Bernard Caspe said Wednesday Iloilo City won over Bacolod City in the highly urbanized city (HUC) category of the Local Health Systems (LHS) 2016 regional awards of the DOH.

They were rated based on their performance on their local government unit scorecard.

The award entitles the city government to a PHP500,000 grant to be used for health-related projects or programs that support the Local Investment Plan for Health and the Annual Operational Plan.

These include innovative practices towards improving local health systems, health education and promotion activities and materials, mobilization and reproduction of advocacy materials relative to the promotion and use of the LGU Health Scorecard, and other government-related activities.

Caspe added that the city health office center in Arevalo also won PHP300,000 for meeting the quality standard for adolescent-friendly health facility while PHP600,000 was awarded for the successful implementation of the Tuberculosis Directly Observed Treatment Course (TB-DOTS).

The city was also recognized as top performing local government unit for the prevention and control of sexually transmitted infection-human immunodeficiency virus (STI-HIV), for launching the national voluntary blood service program, and for winning second place in the Great Smile Award for oral health implementation.

With the awards, Caspe said the CHO would continue to strengthen their delivery of services to their clients.

“We will continue to educate the public about health awareness. We will double the improvement of the city’s health assistance, such as prenatal, immunization, dental, and medical services to provide the community the best health care,” he said.

Caspe, who received the awards during Tuesday’s awarding ceremony held at the Punta Villa in Arevalo district, said he would present the awards to Mayor Jose Espinosa Wednesday afternoon.
